Trail Day Essentials
Florida is flat, warm and full of paved trails, which makes it one of the easiest states in the country to ride all year. You can follow old railroad lines through the quiet middle of the state, ride island to island on the 106-mile Overseas Heritage Trail to Key West, loop through the Everglades at Shark Valley or find real climbs on the mountain bike trails at Santos and Alafia River.
We’ve grouped the trails below into four regions: North Florida and the Panhandle, Orlando and Central Florida, Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast, and South Florida and the Keys. Each card lists the trail’s surface, length and type, with a link to the map, directions and the official trail page. Winter and spring are the best seasons to ride; in summer, start early to beat the heat and the afternoon storms. For other states, see our full list of US bike trails.

North Florida & the Panhandle
Shady paved rail-trails out of Tallahassee, Gainesville and Jacksonville, red-clay singletrack in the Apalachicola National Forest and a quiet trail in the western Panhandle.
Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail
Florida’s first paved rail-trail follows the old Tallahassee-St. Marks railroad for 21 miles from the southern edge of Tallahassee to the waterfront town of St. Marks on the Gulf.
The route is flat and mostly shaded by pines and oaks. About a mile in, the Munson Hills off-road loop branches into the national forest, and a short detour leads to Wakulla Springs State Park. Grab lunch in St. Marks before riding back.

Munson Hills Off-Road Bike Trail
Munson Hills is a beginner-friendly singletrack loop in the Apalachicola National Forest, reached from the Tallahassee-St. Marks trail. The main loop is about 5 miles, and the Pine Top short course adds about 2 more.
Expect rolling hills, sandy sections and red-clay trail through longleaf pine forest, with more connected trails in the forest if you want a longer day. Keep an eye out for gopher tortoises and red-cockaded woodpeckers.

Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail
This paved rail-trail runs 17.1 miles from Depot Park in Gainesville to the small town of Hawthorne. The Gainesville end is surprisingly hilly for Florida; the rest is gentle.
The highlight is the stretch along the edge of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, where overlooks give you a chance to spot bison, wild horses, alligators and wading birds. Bring water: shade and services are limited on the eastern half.

Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail
The Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail runs 14.6 miles from Imeson Road on Jacksonville’s west side to the town of Baldwin, under a thick canopy of trees for most of the way.
Near the middle you can stop at the Camp Milton Historic Preserve, a Civil War site with a boardwalk and a small museum. The trail is flat and straight, so it suits families, steady training rides and anyone who wants an easy 10- to 30-mile out-and-back.

Blackwater Heritage State Trail
The Panhandle’s best-known rail-trail runs 9.6 miles from Milton north to the gate of Naval Air Station Whiting Field, through farmland and pine woods.
The northern 1.5 miles are the Military Heritage Trail, with markers about the base’s history. The path is wide and smooth, though tree roots have pushed up the asphalt in a few places, so watch the surface near the base end.

Orlando & Central Florida
Busy paved trails west and north of Orlando, two long state trails through the rural middle of the state and Florida’s best-known mountain bike trail network near Ocala.
West Orange Trail
Central Florida’s most popular trail runs 22.4 miles from Killarney Station near Oakland, through downtown Winter Garden and on to Apopka.
Winter Garden is the best place to start: the trail runs right through the restored downtown on Plant Street, with bike shops, cafés and a Saturday farmers market. Further on you’ll pass orange groves, the Oakland Nature Preserve and quieter stretches toward Apopka.

Seminole Wekiva Trail
The Seminole Wekiva Trail follows an old rail line for about 20 miles through Altamonte Springs, Longwood and Lake Mary north of Orlando, and the Wekiva Trail continues further into Lake County.
It’s a busy suburban trail with good parking, shade and easy food stops. A bridge over I-4 links it to the Cross Seminole Trail, so you can build a much longer loop on paved paths.

General James A. Van Fleet State Trail
The Van Fleet trail runs 29 miles from Mabel to Polk City and is one of the straightest, most remote rail-trails in the state.
About 9 miles of it cross the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, where you’re more likely to meet alligators, wading birds and gopher tortoises than other riders. There are few services, so carry plenty of water and a spare tube.

Withlacoochee State Trail
At 45.9 miles, the Withlacoochee State Trail is one of Florida’s longest paved rail-trails, running from Citrus Springs south to the Owensboro trailhead near Dade City.

Santos Trailhead (Cross Florida Greenway)
Santos, on the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway just south of Ocala, is Florida’s most famous mountain bike destination, with more than 85 miles of trails in the greenway system.
Singletrack loops for every level start from the trailhead, plus a skills area and the steep, rocky features of the Vortex. The Ocala Mountain Bike Association maintains the trails. The sandy, rooty surface rewards tires with good grip.

Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail
The Pinellas Trail runs 46 miles from downtown St. Petersburg up the Gulf side of the peninsula to the Pasco County line, linking Largo, Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs.
Dunedin is the favorite stop, with the trail running right through its walkable downtown near the water. Tarpon Springs, with its Greek sponge docks, is a good turnaround point at the northern end.

Suncoast Trail
The Suncoast Trail runs 54.1 miles beside the Suncoast Parkway, from Lutz Lake Fern Road north of Tampa to SR 44 near Lecanto.
Because it follows a highway corridor, it’s open and sunny with few road crossings, which makes it a favorite for long training rides. Trailheads with water and restrooms are spread along the route, and a connector leads into the Starkey Wilderness Preserve.

Alafia River State Park
Alafia River State Park near Lithia is a former phosphate mine with some of the steepest terrain in Florida, and about 20 miles of mountain bike trails from beginner loops to advanced lines.
There’s a bike shop with rentals and repairs in the park, and helmets are required. Note: the Gravitron trail has been closed for repairs since August 2026; all other trail areas are open.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail
The Overseas Heritage Trail follows the route of Henry Flagler’s old railroad 106 miles from Key Largo to Key West, using historic bridges between the islands.
Highlights include the old Seven Mile Bridge to Pigeon Key, the Long Key Bridge and Bahia Honda State Park. The trail isn’t continuous yet: some sections share the shoulder of US-1, and some bridges have been closed after storm damage, so check before you go.

Shark Valley (Everglades National Park)
Shark Valley is a 15-mile paved loop into the sawgrass of Everglades National Park, open only to walkers, bikes and the park tram.

Oleta River State Park
Oleta River is Florida’s largest urban park and home to about 15 miles of off-road bike trails in North Miami, from easy loops to tight, technical singletrack.
The trails wind through mangroves and hardwood hammock beside Biscayne Bay. Arrive early on weekends, when the park can close for capacity, and plan to clean and check your bike afterwards: the coral rock and sand are hard on parts.

Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, or LOST, circles one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country for about 114 miles on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike.
The raised trail gives wide views over the lake and the farmland around it, and fall and winter bring herons, egrets and waterfowl. Some sections are paved and others are gravel or grass, and parts can close for dike work, so check before planning a full loop.
